Is there a reason I shouldn't have all of my entries global?

Should all our entries be seen by the AI for every message?

Whilst it might be tempting to make every codex entry visible to the AI at all times, this can quickly add up, both in terms of the context window and costs.

Some things to consider when deciding if a codex entry should be global:

  • How much does this entry matter for steering the novel? Things like genre, your style guide, and the theme of your story will impact any conversation in chat or scene beat. The location of where your character had lunch once… not so much.
  • Will including this information confuse the AI? Sometimes AI can obsess over the smallest of things, and it is easier to remove it from the AI context than to battle against preconceived notions.
  • Is the entry succinct? If your entry goes on for 600 words, perhaps cut it down to the most important aspects before including it in your global entries.

All of this said, you don’t need to follow this advice; if you want all of your codex entries in, and are willing to deal with the cost, then go for it! You might find some really awesome information gets pulled in when you least expected it!
