Adding Codex entries as scene context
Controlling the AI context for scenes.
- Reading Time
- approx. 2 min
Do you ever find that when writing, you have lots of Codex entries that are relevant for your scene… but they don’t fit cleanly into the wording of your beat? Or they need to be mentioned for every beat in a scene, but you don’t want to mention them each time?
Scene context allows you to bring your Codex entries directly into scene beat completion prompts.
The + Codex button on a scene summary allows you to attach specific Codex entries to a scene, adding it to the AI context.
When should I use this?
- You want specific contextual information available to the AI that isn’t naturally mentioned in your beats
- Your scene requires special handling of tone, style, or technical elements (or some random obscure part of your magic system)
- The scene references background events that aren’t explicitly stated
- You need the AI to remember specific character dynamics relevant to this scene but not directly stated
How to add Codex entries to scene context
Go to your scene in the plan interface (or in the write interface)
Click the + Codex button below your scene summary
Select the Codex entries you want to attach to this scene
You can check the prompt preview to see where the added Codex entries appear in the prompt.
Troubleshooting
AI ignores important information in attached entries
Cause: Too many Codex entries are attached to a single scene. The AI has too much information, some of which is not relevent.
Solution: Be selective and only attach entries that provide crucial context; prioritize quality over quantity.
Cause: Key information is buried in lengthy Codex entries
Solution: Create concise, focused Codex entries specifically for scene attachments, or highlight the most important aspects at the beginning of the entry.
Solution: If you only require a small detail from a long codex entry, it may be more cost/time efficient to manually add this information into the beat when relevant.
AI adds contradictory information despite attached Codex entries
Cause: Conflicting information between scene beats and attached entries
Solution: Review your beats and attached entries to ensure consistency; if conflicts exist, clarify which source takes precedence and edit accordingly
Scene context feels fragmented or lacks cohesion
Cause: Relying too heavily on Codex entries instead of comprehensive scene planning
Solution: Attaching Codex entries to the scene context is not designed to be a substitute for clear planning; you still need to plan out how the scene plays out (unless you’re going complete “discovery writer” with this).
